I am fortunate to stay in a complex opposite an open smallholding with big trees, mostly blue gum trees where a couple of Black Sparrowhawks have been breeding for the last couple of years.
The Black Sparrowhawk (Accipiter melanoleucus), also known as the Black Goshawk or Great Sparrowhawk is the largest species of True Hawk in Africa. They are mainly found in forest and non-desert areas south of the Sahara, particularly where there are large trees suitable for nesting. Habitat includes suburban and human-altered landscapes. They prey predominantly on birds such as pigeons and doves, in suburban areas.
Although it is very difficult to see wherever there is a chick they are very active and noisy certain times of the year. They are normally quite well hidden in the trees but often like to sit in some of the high dead trees where they are more visible. From there they can also spot prey better and keep an eye on their surroundings.
Here are some of the photos I have taken over the last while …. hope you enjoy.
